The seminar entitled "Impact of additive manufacturing on industry: technological perspective and latest trends" organised by the IK4 R&D Alliance took place in the main building in the Science and Technology Park of Gipuzkoa in Donostia/San Sebastian on 23 November.
About 160 members of major companies, R&D centres and institutions took part in this seminar that provided a chance to share the latest technological trends in additive manufacturing and the opportunities that this technique is opening up for companies.
Additive manufacturing is one of the lines underpinning advanced manufacturing. It is a technique enabling structures and parts to be produced through the superposition of successive layers of material, unlike traditional methods in which the material is removed rather than added.
Its use is leading to the emergence of innovative applications of great interest and which are already opening up new opportunities in the design and manufacture of parts, components and machinery. Yet the industry is still only taking its first steps towards incorporating additive manufacturing into its production processes.
Through various talks IK4 took an in-depth look at the latest developments in this technology and tackled its various aspects as well as the challenges and opportunities currently being identified in this respect. Peter Sander, director of the "Emerging technologies & Concepts" area at Airbus Operations, also explained how his company is applying this technology in its processes, the future lines of work and his perspective on the opportunities and challenges associated with it.
