IK4 Participates in the EHU-UPV Summer Courses on the Phenomenon of Mobile Talent

06/21/2017 |<img src='http://www.ik4.es/upload/noticias/img/mesa-redonda.jpg' data-link='http://www.donostiatechweek.eus/es/home/' /> The IK4 Technological Alliance participated in a course on the phenomenon of talent mobility for highly qualified workers held last June 19 and 20 at Miramar Palace in Donostia as part of the Basque Country University (EHU-UPV) summer courses. Entitled “The Value of Local Talent: A Shared Initiative” and organized by the Economic Promotion Council through San Sebastián Promotion (Fomento de San Sebastián), the cycle aimed to identify public as well as private initiatives and disseminate the activities the city is undertaking from different perspectives – education, business and local institutions – to prevent brain drain.

The IK4 presence at this forum relates to the alliance’s experience and strategy for talent recruitment. In this sphere, IK4 has worked intensely over these past two years to be able to recruit a significant number of technologists specializing mainly in engineering, physics, chemistry or biology for institutions, simultaneously consolidating its contribution to the competitive capacity of the Basque industrial fabric.

Eduardo Granados, CEIT-IK4 researcher, participated at a round table. He recently returned to the city along with two other researchers, thanks to the “Returning Local Talent” program that San Sebastián Promotion started up to encourage city youth posted abroad to return. The testimony of these three served to better understand the situation and expectations of this type of professionals, the reality of the international labor market in which they moved and the positive and negative circumstances conditioning their comeback.

Another of the discussions benefited from the participation of IK4 and other agents to debate about the key points of this mobility and the opportunities for establishment in Donostia as a talent attraction pole.

One of the presentations focused on a study prepared by the San Sebastián public entity in collaboration with the Vice Chancellor’s Office of the UPV/EHU Gipuzkoa campus. The results of this report show that, of the 13,203 graduates from this campus during the past 5 years, about 841 from San Sebastián are abroad or outside the Basque regional community, either for work reasons or to complete their academic training. The study also shows that only 32% (4,205) of those who finished their studies are living in Donostia.

Apart from the local participants and testimonies, there were presentations from two agencies sponsored by Dutch and Baltic local and regional governments that served as examples of other initiatives being implemented to deal with this general problem. Both entities focus their efforts on promoting the benefits afforded by their areas as attractive places in which to live, where talent from around the world can develop to its full potential.
