Technological areas

The Alliance of IK4 centres bases its activity around eight scientific and tecnological units: Biotechnology, Micro- and nano-technologies, Environmental Technology, Energy, Industrial management and production, Mechatronics, Materials and processes and Information and Communications Technologies.

With these units, the Technological Centres cover the full range of activities, from basic research to development. Over the years in the Alliance, we have developed large-scale, joint projects, taking advantage of the synergies of our members.

In IK4 we are different, because we propose a collective grouping of strengths, the result of pooling all the knowledge, numerical capacity and the synergistic effect of team work.

This technological production incorporates both the technologies shared by more than one centre, and those which are exclusive to one of the Alliance members, which are complementary to other capabilities, and is configured around 8 large areas:


  • Biotechnology and Biomaterials

    The Biotechnology & Biomaterials Unit focuses on R&D projects dealing with different technologies related to Industrial Microbiology, Genomics & Proteomics and Molecular Biology. Major services include In vitro Testing, Biosensors, Biomaterials, Surface Functionalisation, Bioelectrochemistry and Artificial Vision Analysis of Biological Structures. We are committed to provide solutions to the Pharmaceutical, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Human & Animal Health or Food industries, among others.

  • Energy

    Energy technologies addressed by IK4 include Hydrogen and Fuel Cells, Wind and Solar Power, Distributed Generation, Energy Storage, Combustion and Biofuels. Due to its clear commitment to last generation energy technologies, its result-oriented policy and its close collaboration with industry, IK4 appears as a reference for a wide variety of directly or indirectly energy-related sectors.

  • Environment & Recycling

    The Environment & Recycling Unit provides reference technological services in the field of Water, Soil & Sediments, Waste, Meteorology & Atmosphere and Sustainability & Environmental Management. We work with multidisciplinary teams to give innovative solutions to a wide variety of sectors, with a particular presence in eco-businesses and Public Administrations.

  • Industrial Management and Production

    The aim of the Industrial Management & Production Unit is to improve design, product development & manufacturing processes. One of its major specialisation fields deals with organisation, optimisation and management of production flows. Another issue tackled by this Unit is the environmental impact assessment and the reliability and maintenance of products along their life cycle. At a more strategic level, projects about innovation management and new organisational models supporting innovation are also dealt with.

  • Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs)

    The IK4 ICT Unit is in the forefront technology as regards to Information and Communication Technologies development and integration to promote both industry and society. For this purpose, it has skilled work teams in the different ICT-related disciplines like artificial vision, sensorics and actuation, computer graphics and visualization technologies, semantics and multimedia management, audiovisual production, etc. The technological solutions provided by IK4 ICT Unit are highly competitive in regard to existing state-of-the-art technologies at international level. Moreover, they promote innovation and direct and natural communication with its target industrial sectors.

  • Materials and Processes

    The Materials & Processes Unit provides benchmark technological services on Thermo-mechanical Treatments. Materials & Processes Mechanics and Modelling, Thermoplastics, Thermosets, Development and Application of Coatings and Thin Films, etc.

  • Mechatronics

    The IK4 Mecatronics Unit activity is framed within different work areas such as Precision Engineering, Development of Advanced Mecatronic Products, System Regulation, Control & Simulation, Noise & Vibration, Opto-electronic Sensors, Power Electronics & Automation, High-Performance Buses, Wireless Communications, etc.

  • Micro and Nanotechnologies

    The IK4 Micro & Nanotechnology Unit is framed in four working fields. We provide solutions to our clients as regards to Micro-nanodevices, Micro-nanoengineering, Nanomaterials and Nanocoatings. For this purpose, we work in multidisciplinary teams to give innovative solutions to our clients especially regarding the health, energy or transport sectors.
