			<title><![CDATA[ A fresh image for a new phase ]]></title>
			<description><![CDATA[ <p>Despite the severe economic crisis, IK4 presented some results in 2011 consolidated at 103 million euros and driven by direct contracting by companies, which have reaffirmed their commitment to R+D+i and the entry of which accounts for 60% of the Alliance&rsquo;s total income.<br /><br />The figures put our Alliance among Europe&rsquo;s 10 main private technology corporations leading the percentage in terms of income from private investment, which, according to IK4&rsquo;s directors, reaffirms its role as "an efficient and attractive model for private investment.&rdquo; <br /><br />The results and forecasts were presented by IK4&rsquo;s Chairman, Jes&uacute;s Iriondo, and its CEO Jos&eacute; Miguel Erdozain, who were accompanied by the senior executives in charge of the 9 partner centres and by members of the Strategic Committee, which held its third plenary session.<br /><br />These good results are the basis on which IK4 will, over the coming months, be launching its strategic reflection. This reflection is already far advanced and aims to draw up its new Strategic Plan 2013-2016 with its sights placed on Basque industry and the global knowledge market, and on which six big challenges pivot: globalisation, specialisation, innovation, communication, people and strategic vision.<br /><br />The people in charge at IK4 rated the results presented by the alliance in 2011 as &ldquo;highly positive&rdquo;, since they confirm their theory that research, development and innovation are being turned into the cornerstones of economic revival, and that IK4 is being built on a &ldquo;fundamental tool for contributing towards the revival, sustainability and competitiveness of the economy,&rdquo; based on its role as a driving force of companies in the form of an R+D+i antenna. <br /><br />IK4 was keen that this renewed boost to its federal commitment, reflected in its new Strategic Plan, should have its symbolic representation reflected in a fresh visual identity that represents the values on which the Alliance rests, and which was warmly welcomed during its presentation to the general public on 27 January.</p> ]]></description>

			<title><![CDATA[ IK4 incorporates as ninth partner of Bizkaia-based Azterlan technological centre ]]></title>
			<description><![CDATA[ <p>Azterlan thus brings its skills to join the other eight centres forming part of the alliance (Ceit, Cidetec, Gaiker, Ideko, Ikerlan, Lortek, Tekniker and Vicomtech). This incorporation enables IK4 to enhance its technological provision, based on research specialisation and excellence, with a clear commitment to transforming these into added value for business companies.<br /><br />The incorporation of IK4 into Azterlan was officially undertaken on signing an agreement by the presidents of Azterlan, Alberto Oribe, and of IK4, Jes&uacute;s Mar&iacute;a Iriondo, thereby terminating a process that had begun on the 31 January past.<br /><br />Azterlan is a technological centre specialising in metallurgy and aimed at developing applied research innovation and technological services. With a workforce of some 100 professionals, Azterlan focuses its activity on specialisation in metallurgy, on their skills in technologies of transformation and on their internationalisation, thus enabling them to have vanguard positions within the European industrial framework, maintaining therein close cooperation with universities and with other research centres.<br /><br />Included in the incorporation of this centre is Lortek, a centre for research into union technologies with main offices in Ordizia (In the Basque province of Gipuzkoa) and also effected in 2011, thus culminating the growth stage carried out by IK4 in recent years, with the aim of enhancing its technological provision and provide critical mass to compete with guarantees in the European R+D sector. <br /><br />This growth enables IK4 to position itself as technological partner of the companies in order to undertake all kinds of projects in a multitude of application sectors. IK4 is amongst the top 10 private technological corporations in Europe, with 1,430 professionals and an overall volume of income of 103 M&euro; in R+D+i in 2011.</p> ]]></description>

			<title><![CDATA[ IDEKO-IK4 ha celebrado hoy su 25 Aniversario ]]></title>
			<description><![CDATA[ <p>Esta ma&ntilde;ana se ha celebrado en Elgoibar el 25 aniversario del Centro  Tecnol&oacute;gico Ideko-IK4. En el acto han estado presentes, entre otros:  Bernab&eacute; Unda (Consejero de Industria), Jon Goikolea (Viceconsejero de  Industria), Arantxa Tapia (Diputada Congreso), Jon Uriguen Ansola  (Diputado de Innovaci&oacute;n), Alfredo Etxeberria (Alcalde de Elgoibar), Jos&eacute;  Mar&iacute;a Aldekoa (Presidente MCC),Jes&uacute;s M&ordf; Astigarraga (presidente de  DANOBATGROUP), Rafael Barrenechea (Presidente Ideko-IK4), Ram&oacute;n  Uribe-Echeberria (Director-Gerente Ideko-IK4)...<br /><br /><br />Tras una  intervenci&oacute;n del Sr. Emilio Dur&oacute; sobre &ldquo;La gesti&oacute;n de la ilusi&oacute;n en  tiempos de cambio&rdquo; que ha motivado a todo el auditorio, ha iniciado el  acto institucional Don Ram&oacute;n Uribe-Echeberr&iacute;a Director Gerente de  Ideko-IK4, quien ha sido el encargado de hacer un recorrido por estos 25  a&ntilde;os.<br /><br />A continuaci&oacute;n Don Rafael Barrenechea, Presidente de  Ideko-IK4 ha desglosado alguno de los hitos m&aacute;s importantes en la  historia de Ideko-IK4 y ha presentado tambi&eacute;n los nuevos desaf&iacute;os de  futuro. <br /><br />Por su parte Jos&eacute; Mar&iacute;a Aldekoa, Presidente de  MONDRAG&Oacute;N, ha se&ntilde;alado la importancia de Ideko-ik4 en el desarrollo de  la Innovaci&oacute;n a nivel Internacional.<br /><br />Ha finalizado el acto el  Lehendakari Patxi L&oacute;pez felicitando a este centro y se&ntilde;alando la  importancia de empresas como Ideko-IK4, comprometidas con la empresa  vasca en su desarrollo en I + D,&nbsp; para el desarrollo y crecimiento del  tejido industrial vasco. <br /><br />Por &uacute;ltimo destacar la presencia en el  acto de la empresa china de sector ferrocarril Febrero7, cuyo director  general el Sr. Zhang Jianzhong- General Manager ha agradecido a  Ideko-IK4 su labor de apoyo en el desarrollo tecnol&oacute;gico de las empresas  del sector de M&aacute;quina Herramienta a la vez que ha destacado el papel  Ideko-IK4 como clave en el mantenimiento de la competitividad  internacional de este sector.</p>

			<title><![CDATA[ Cientos de personas disfrutan de los últimos avances en Robótica de la mano de IK4 ]]></title>
			<description><![CDATA[ <p>Los asistentes, entre los que se contaron cientos de alumnos de  diferentes centros educativos, representantes de empresas vascas y  ciudadanos atra&iacute;dos por esta disciplina, tuvieron la oportunidad de  contemplar una buena muestra de los &uacute;ltimos avances en Rob&oacute;tica. <br /><br />Las  diferentes entidades participantes, entre las que IK4 tuvo lugar  destacado, expusieron sus prototipos y programaron sus robots para que  pudieran interactuar a lo largo de todo el d&iacute;a con los visitantes. De  este modo, los responsables del &aacute;rea de rob&oacute;tica de varios centros de la  Alianza explicaron de primera mano al p&uacute;blico los avances y  aplicaciones de los robots expuestos.<br /><br />Entre ellos, humanoides  peleando como luchadores de sumo sobre un tatami de competici&oacute;n, un  robot &ldquo;social&rdquo; que toma decisiones propias y comprende el entorno de una  manera &ldquo;emocional&rdquo;, un robot que controla la seguridad vial detectando  obst&aacute;culos a su paso, un brazo articulado capaz de realizar acciones  complejas, un robot construido con piezas de Lego o robots programados  para salvar vidas en situaciones de emergencia o ayudar a personas  discapacitadas en tareas concretas. <br /><br />En definitiva, una masiva  jornada de car&aacute;cter tecnol&oacute;gico en la que se mostraron robots avanzados  en diversas &aacute;reas de aplicaci&oacute;n desde diversos puntos de vista:  comercial, educativa o de proyectos de investigaci&oacute;n. Y una buena  oportunidad para que IK4 acercara a la sociedad sus capacidades en un  &aacute;rea que va a experimentar un gran desarrollo en el futuro.</p> ]]></description>

			<title><![CDATA[ IK4 participates in the &#8220;Young people in research&#8221; course on R&D&i in the Basque Autonomous Community ]]></title>
			<description><![CDATA[ <p><br />The event, officially opened by the Deputy Minister for Innovation and Technology of the Government of the Basque Autonomous Community Juan Goicolea, included on the first day a lecture given by IK4&rsquo;s Executive Vice-Chairman Guillermo Dorronsoro and entitled &ldquo;The Professional Career in the Science and Technology System&rdquo;. <br /><br />At the same time, Jos&eacute; Miguel Erdozain, the Technology Alliance&rsquo;s CEO, participated in a roundtable discussion on &ldquo;Innovation in the market of the globalised economies&rdquo; alongside the Executive Officer for Internationalisation at Innobasque, Xabier Maidagan, and the Head of People Development at Tecnalia, Juan Jos&eacute; Go&ntilde;i.<br /><br />IK4 made a key contribution on day two of the course, too, when the CEO of Gaiker-IK4 Bego&ntilde;a Goiricelaya delivered a lecture in which she presented her R&amp;D centre as a &ldquo;pioneer in Basque R&amp;D&amp;i&rdquo;. <br /><br />The conference provided a good opportunity for highlighting the importance of IK4 as one of the key agents in the Basque Network of Science, Technology and Innovation before an audience of mainly university students, who had the chance to get to know at first hand the possibilities that research can offer them as they plan their professional futures.</p> ]]></description>

			<title><![CDATA[ IK4&#8217;s Strategic Committee sets itself six areas of work to define the Alliance&#8217;s future horizon ]]></title>
			<description><![CDATA[ <p>The second plenary meeting of IK4's Strategic Committee, an organ of a consultative nature set up on 27 January, was held in the Bizkaia Aretoa (the new assembly hall of the UPV/EHU-University of the Basque Country). It set out to develop a process of shared reflection among the top players in the Basque science and technology environment with a view to establishing the strategic foundations on which the Alliance&rsquo;s future activity has to rest.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The IK4 Alliance is tackling the final straight in its Strategic Plan 2009-2012 with its sights set on Basque industry and the global market for knowledge, and linking this reflection process with what will be the new Strategic Plan for 2012-2016. So the Strategic Committee established the bases for the six challenges the Alliance will be focussing on over the coming months.&nbsp; The six challenges, which were presented by IK4 Chairman Jesus Iriondo, are as follows:</p>
<p>1)&nbsp;The globalisation of the market for knowledge, which requires that R&amp;D centres tackle the international dimension with determination.<br />2)&nbsp;Specialisation, to concentrate efforts on specific spheres of action.<br />3)&nbsp;The effectiveness of the systems for innovation, a task shared with the other scientific and technological players.<br />4)&nbsp;Communication with companies and with the general public, with whom IK4 is keen to be in tune and maintain rapport to a maximum degree.<br />5)&nbsp;The importance of people and the social networks in a context of growing global competition for research talent. <br />6)&nbsp;The commitment to a model of governance at the service of a strategic vision with a view to promoting Basque industry as the driving force of our economy in the new global scenario.</p>
<p>To channel the reflection process on these six strategic challenges, as many working teams were set up in which the Committee members are collaborating by generating papers that will be guiding the Alliance&rsquo;s strategic decisions.</p> ]]></description>

			<title><![CDATA[ IK4, presente en la mayor exposición europea de materiales compuestos ]]></title>
			<description><![CDATA[ <p>IK4 expondr&aacute; sus desarrollos en el marco del pabell&oacute;n de Espa&ntilde;a, que en esta edici&oacute;n es el Pa&iacute;s de Honor de la feria, donde compartir&aacute; espacio con entidades como Tecnatom, Aernnova, Sener, Future Fibres, Roberlo, Centro Avanzado de Tecnolog&iacute;as Aeroespaciales (CATEC), APPlus+, Aciturri, Fundaci&oacute;n para la Investigaci&oacute;n, Desarrollo y Aplicaci&oacute;n de Materiales Compuestos (FIDAMC), Aimplas, Sofitec, Intermas, Tecnalia, Grupo Tam o Fiberflight.</p>
<p>La Alianza presentar&aacute; una muestra de sus principales capacidades en tres grandes &aacute;reas de actuaci&oacute;n: materiales, procesos y fabricaci&oacute;n y reciclaje. As&iacute;, expondr&aacute; las &uacute;ltimas investigaciones en materiales inteligentes, nanomateriales, biomateriales y electr&oacute;nica pl&aacute;stica, as&iacute; como procesos de montaje a medida, o aplicaciones medioambientales de los composites.</p>
<p>Los materiales compuestos aportan amplias posibilidades de aplicaci&oacute;n en campos tan diversos como la aeron&aacute;utica, la automoci&oacute;n, la energ&iacute;a e&oacute;lica o la n&aacute;utica.</p>
<p>Durante la feria se estudiar&aacute;n todas estas tendencias en todos los sectores de aplicaci&oacute;n con el fin de proporcionar 12 foros de alta calidad para los usuarios finales y las industrias, as&iacute; como conferencias t&eacute;cnicas y de estrategia a todos los participantes en la industria de los composites. JEC Composites cuenta con 96 pa&iacute;ses representados, y el 85% de los 1.000 expositores son internacionales.</p> ]]></description>

			<title><![CDATA[ IK4 participa en el principal proyecto de electricidad inteligente en Gipuzkoa ]]></title>
			<description><![CDATA[ <p>El primer paso de esta ambiciosa apuesta estar&aacute; listo para finales del pr&oacute;ximo a&ntilde;o, cuando ya se contar&aacute; con una micro-red el&eacute;ctrica inteligente y de car&aacute;cter experimental, que ser&aacute; instalada en el Parque Tecnol&oacute;gico de San Sebasti&aacute;n y tendr&aacute; capacidad para gestionar 400 kilovatios de potencia.</p>
<p>'iSare' cuenta con la participaci&oacute;n destacada de IK4, que, a trav&eacute;s de sus centros Ceit, Cidetec y Tekniker, aporta investigaci&oacute;n tecnol&oacute;gica de vanguardia en el &aacute;mbito de la energ&iacute;a. El proyecto est&aacute; promovido por la Diputaci&oacute;n de Gipuzkoa, el Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovaci&oacute;n y un grupo de empresas de Gaia -el Cluster vasco de la Electr&oacute;nica y las Telecomunicaciones- liderados por Jema. Entre dichas empresas figuran Electro TAZ, Cegasa, Ingesea y Oasa Transformadores.</p>
<p>El proyecto cuenta con un presupuesto inicial de 6,6 millones de euros, de los que cuatro ser&aacute;n aportados por la Diputaci&oacute;n de Gipuzkoa, otros dos por el Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovaci&oacute;n y el resto por los diferentes agentes participantes.</p>
<p>La iniciativa fue presentada el pasado 4 de marzo en el Parque de San Sebasti&aacute;n por el diputado general, Markel Olano; el secretario general de Innovaci&oacute;n del Ministerio de Ciencias e Innovaci&oacute;n, Juan Tom&aacute;s Hernani; el director de Innovaci&oacute;n de Iberdrola, Agust&iacute;n Delgado, y los directores generales de Jema, Jos&eacute; Mar&iacute;a del R&iacute;o, y del parque, Lucio Hernando. En el acto estuvo presnete una delegaci&oacute;n de IK4, encabezada por su presidente, Jes&uacute;s Mar&iacute;a Iriondo, y su director general, Jos&eacute; Miguel Erdozain.</p>
<p>El proyecto cambiar&aacute; el concepto de red el&eacute;ctrica actual, para ofrecer un modelo basado en fuentes de generaci&oacute;n de origen renovable, tales como la micro-e&oacute;lica, la solar fotovoltaica y las celdas de combustible, as&iacute; como en los m&aacute;s avanzados sistemas de almacenamiento, entre los que cabe destacar los s&uacute;per condensadores y las bater&iacute;as de ion litio.</p> ]]></description>

			<title><![CDATA[ The Bizkaia-based centre Azterlan signs an agreement to become IK4&#8217;s ninth partner ]]></title>
			<description><![CDATA[ <p>On 31 January Azterlan signed the agreement whereby it began the process to join IK4, which will culminate during the first quarter of 2012. The agreement was signed by the chairman of Azterlan, Alberto Oribe, and of IK4, Jes&uacute;s Mar&iacute;a Iriondo; they were accompanied by the CEOs of the two organisations, Pedro Intxausti and Jos&eacute; Miguel Erdozain, respectively.</p>
<p>The adding of Azterlan&rsquo;s capacities to the eight centres that already make up our alliance (Ceit, Cidetec, Gaiker, Ideko, Ikerlan, Lortek, Tekniker and Vicomtech) will enable IK4 to enrich its technology offer based on specialisation and research excellence with a clear calling to transform it into value.</p>
<p>Azterlan is an R+D centre that specialises in metallurgy and is geared towards the development of applied research, innovation and technological services. With a human team of around 100 professionals, Azterlan focuses its activity on specialization in metallurgy, its mastery of transformation technologies and its internationalisation, which allows it to take up positions at the forefront of the European industrial network, where it has close links with universities and other research centres.</p>
<p>Azterlan&rsquo;s specialisation in this sphere will allow IK4 to enrich its technological offer which is currently grouped around eight scientific and technological units: Biotechnology and Biomaterials, Micro- and Nano-technologies, Environment and Recycling, Energy, Industrial Management and Production, Mechatronics, Materials and Processes, and Information and Communication Technologies. This specialisation enables it to position itself as the technology partner of companies in order to undertake any kind of project in a whole range of sectors of application.</p>
<p>The incorporation of the new partner will also help IK4 to add greater critical mass and offer a broader proposal when it comes to setting itself up as the R+D+i antenna of companies. That way it will number nearly 1,500 professionals with a global revenue set to exceed &euro;105M in R+D+i in 2011.</p> ]]></description>

			<title><![CDATA[ Meeting of the IK4&#8217;s Strategic Committee ]]></title>
			<description><![CDATA[ <p>IK4&rsquo;s Strategic Committee held its foundational meeting yesterday and is anticipating holding several plenary sessions a year. The forthcoming one is planned for July when it expects to draw up the papers on the appraisal of the current strategic framework (2009-2012) and the specifying of IK4&rsquo;s strategy for the medium to long term, and decide on the setting up of working teams for this purpose.</p>
<p>IK4&rsquo;s Strategic Committee comprises the following people from the business sphere: the Chairman of Confebask [Basque Business Confederation], Miguel Lazpiur; the chairmen of the three provincial employers&rsquo; associations, Jos&eacute; Mar&iacute;a V&aacute;zquez Eguskiza, Eduardo Zubiaurre and Juan Jos&eacute; Azurmendi; Juan Ignacio L&oacute;pez Gand&aacute;segui, the chairman of Aernnova; Alvaro Videg&aacute;in of Tubacex; Txomin Garc&iacute;a of the Caja Laboral co-operative savings bank;&nbsp; Itziar Unzueta of Ekotek; Pedro Luis Uriarte of Empresa, Econom&iacute;a y Estrategia; the vice-chairman of the Mondrag&oacute;n Co-operative Corporation, Javier Sotil; and the CEOs In&eacute;s Anitua of ACICAE and Joseba Mandal&uacute;niz of MTC, among others.</p>
<p>The institutions are represented through the General Secretary for Innovation of the Spanish Government Juan Tom&aacute;s Hernani; the Deputy Minister for Technology and Innovation of the Government of the Basque Autonomous Community [region] Juan Goicolea; the Deputy Minister for Industry and Energy, Xabier Garmendia; the Deputy Minister for Universities and Research, Pedro Luis Arias; and the Deputy Minister for Innovation and Health, Olga Rivera; as well as the Director of Technology Edorta Larrauri; the member of Bizkaia Charter Provincial Council responsible for Economic Development Izaskun Artetxe; the member of Alava Charter Provincial Council responsible for Economic Development Arantza Zenarrutzabeitia; the member of Gipuzkoa Charter Provincial Council responsible for Innovation Jos&eacute; Ram&oacute;n Guridi; and the Managing Director of Promotion and Communication of Innobasque, Pilar Kaltzada.</p>
<p>Participating from the academic sphere are the Vice-Chancellors of the following universities: UPV/EHU-University of the Basque Country, I&ntilde;aki Goirizelaia; University of Deusto, Jaime Ora&aacute;; and the Mondragon University, Josu Zabala.&nbsp;&nbsp; Also participating are prominent figures in the scientific and technological sphere like the CEO of CIC bioGUNE [Centre for Co-operative Research in Biosciences], Jos&eacute; Mar&iacute;a Mato, or the members of Jakiunde [Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters] Jos&eacute; Antonio Garrido and Javier Retegui.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The forum is completed by the chairmen of the eight technology centres that make up IK4 and the leading members of the Alliance led by its Chairman, Jes&uacute;s Mar&iacute;a Iriondo; its CEO, Jos&eacute; Miguel Erdozain; and its Deputy Chairman, Guillermo Dorronsoro.</p>
<p>The mission of this new body is to lend support to IK4&rsquo;s strategic management by advising on specific questions as well as evaluating its results in terms of progress in knowledge.&nbsp; It will also be advising during the annual updating of the Strategic Plan by means of operational plans, and will be issuing monitoring and evaluation reports. 			<title><![CDATA[ Presentation of the agreement incorporating LORTEK into the IK4 Technology Alliance ]]></title>
			<description><![CDATA[ <p>Lortek thus becomes the eighth centre to join the Alliance within the shared effort to promote R+D+i in the Basque Country, and takes on a leading role in the strengthening of the innovative and competitive capacity of Basque companies.</p>
<p><br />I&ntilde;aki Ota&ntilde;o pointed out that the incorporation of Lortek into the alliance would enable the specialisation offer that IK4 offers its clients to be expanded, and would contribute towards its positioning as a reference in the science and technological milieu by reinforcing expertise in the manufacturing processes linked to bonding technologies. According to Mr. Ota&ntilde;o, the raison d&rsquo;&ecirc;tre of the IK4 Alliance is to combine resources and exchange best practices with the aim of helping the Centres to achieve greater levels of scientific and technological excellence, and thus benefit the whole of society.</p>
<p><br />Jes&uacute;s Mar&iacute;a Iriondo, the Chairman of the IK4 Technology Alliance, said that the incorporation of Lortek would contribute decisively towards increasing IK4's capacities as a Technology Alliance, and this would enable it to present to the production base an offer that is even more complete as regards the generation and transfer of scientific and technological knowledge.&nbsp; According to Mr.&nbsp; Iriondo, this agreement endorses the IK4 management model underpinned by excellence and organised on the basis of a federal model of sovereign centres with a common strategy. 			<title><![CDATA[ Jesús Mª Iriondo new chairman of IK4 ]]></title>
			<description><![CDATA[ <p>Jes&uacute;s Mar&iacute;a Iriondo Arrizabalaga, Chairman of Tekniker-IK4, has been appointed as IK4&rsquo;s new chairman to succeed Rafael Barrenechea (Ideko-IK4) as a result of the reorganisation the Technology Alliance has effected in its chairmanship. Jesus Maria Iriondo, an Electronics Engineer by training and specialized in robotics, has wide experience in the business world.</p>
<p>Since 2004 he has been managing the group activity from the company Microelectr&oacute;nica Maser, a company endowed with high technological added value and located in Mendaro (Gipuzkoa) and which specialises in the application of electronic technologies. Mr. Iriondo combines this latest position with that of the chairmanship of Tekniker-IK4, a technology centre that has been part of IK4 since the Technology Alliance was set up in 2005.</p>
<p><br />The appointment of Jes&uacute;s Mar&iacute;a Iriondo as IK4&rsquo;s new chairman with effect as of 16 December and which will be for a period of the next 4 years, was approved by the unanimous decision of the Board of Directors and General Meeting of the Technology Alliance, since Rafael Barrenechea&rsquo;s commitment in his position ended in 2010.</p> ]]></description>

			<title><![CDATA[ CEIT-IK4 hosts the 1st Conference on Intelligent Transport Systems ]]></title>
			<description><![CDATA[ <p>On September 24 the technological centre will host the 1st Euskadi Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Conference, whose theme will be 'Sustainability and Intelligent Transportation Systems'. The conference is being organised by the Mobility and Logistics Cluster of Euskadi.</p>
<p>In the Basque Country, the mobility sector --both for goods and people-- brings together a large number of companies, reaching a turnover of more than 9 billion euros, which represents 15% of the region's GDP.</p>
<p>The MLC notes that Intelligent Transportation Systems are "one of the main areas of research and are already one of the most innovative and promising emerging businesses." As a result, the aims of the conference are to present and discuss the latest innovations that are under development, offer an annual framework for sharing experiences and contacts, provide a forum for specialists to learn about the advances made by companies working in the ITS field, and encourage cooperation among all the meetings' participants.</p> ]]></description>

			<title><![CDATA[ Gaiker-IK4 working on project to improve desalination plants ]]></title>
			<description><![CDATA[ <p>The growing demand for these tubes requires R+D+i resources that enable the development of new materials and processes of manufacture. The aim is to reduce manufacturing costs and the weight of the manufactured items, thus facilitating their subsequent assembly, handling, etc. More concretely, the R+D+i project in which Gaiker-IK4 is jointly working with Bekaert focuses on the identification of different parts of the inverse osmosis tubes. These are to be modified as regards design, to be subsequently adapted to composite materials and their manufacturing processes.</p>
<p>Advantages of compound materials<br />Composite materials are those made up of two or more physically distinguishable components. They are lighter than the components currently used in inverse osmosis tubes (manufactured in metallic materials), and the treatment of which are cheaper. Moreover, they are able to combine the properties of ceramics, plastics and metals. They are common, for example, in industries such as transport, where materials are required that are light, rigid, resistant to impact and also to corrosion and wear, properties that rarely come together.</p>
<p>This particular case requires a material that is rigid and resistant at the same time, given that it has to comply with high-performance mechanical exigencies. It is also useful that the new material for the inverse osmosis tubes withstand different chemical attacks, still keeping its lightweight properties.</p>
<p>The processes of transformation used today in the manufacture of metallic components are not only reflected considerably in the final price of the part, but also, moreover, offer a relatively low manufacturing capacity. Thus, viable processes of transformation in the case of composite materials are favourable in both senses and are an option of great interest.</p> ]]></description>

			<title><![CDATA[ IKERLAN-IK4 consigue una financiación de la Unión Europea superior al millón de euros para investigar en salud y energía ]]></title>
			<description><![CDATA[ <p>El Centro de Investigaciones Tecnol&oacute;gicas Ikerlan-IK4 ha conseguido una financiaci&oacute;n de la Uni&oacute;n Europea de 1.406.722 euros para invertir en cinco proyectos relacionados con la salud y la energ&iacute;a que recientemente ha aprobado el S&eacute;ptimo Programa Marco (7PM). Esta importante presencia europea se ve reforzada con el establecimiento de alianzas e intercambio de investigadores con reconocidas entidades que desarrollan su actividad en la UE.</p>
<p><br />La ayuda europea recibida permite a Ikerlan-IK4 cumplir con el objetivo de financiar durante el presente ejercicio un 8,5% de su presupuesto con ingresos procedentes del 7PM. Adem&aacute;s, confirma la idoneidad de su apuesta por los sectores sanitario y energ&eacute;tico, puesto que se alinea con las pol&iacute;ticas investigadoras estrat&eacute;gicas promovidas en Europa.<br />En el &aacute;mbito de la salud, Ikerlan-IK4 participa en un proyecto clave para la detecci&oacute;n precoz del c&aacute;ncer de c&eacute;rvix para mejorar su prevenci&oacute;n. SelfPOCNAD dise&ntilde;ar&aacute;, en el plazo de dos a&ntilde;os, un dispositivo capaz de detectar esta enfermedad en unas pocas horas. En &eacute;l destaca el desarrollo de un kit para que las mujeres puedan recoger las muestras en la intimidad y evitarles acudir a consultas ginecol&oacute;gicas para la toma de muestras vaginales.<br />Otros proyectos europeos que cuentan con la participaci&oacute;n de Ikerlan-IK4 se integran en el sector de la energ&iacute;a. Uno de ellos es RAMSES, que tiene como objetivo crear una pila de combustible de &oacute;xido s&oacute;lido innovadora, robusta, duradera y rentable que contribuya a un uso de la energ&iacute;a m&aacute;s barato y respetuoso con el medio ambiente. La misma finalidad persigue Intelli-Flue, que incrementar&aacute; la eficiencia energ&eacute;tica a trav&eacute;s de la recuperaci&oacute;n del calor del humo de las chimeneas dom&eacute;sticas y su posterior aplicaci&oacute;n en la producci&oacute;n de calor y agua caliente.</p>
<p><br />La potenciaci&oacute;n de las energ&iacute;as renovables y su aplicaci&oacute;n en los hogares de un modo integrado y rentable es el objetivo de otro de los proyectos financiados por la UE, el SmartHeat. El proyecto FC-DISTRICT, en cambio, apostar&aacute; por crear sistemas de generaci&oacute;n de energ&iacute;a aut&oacute;nomos en distritos urbanos o industriales y su posterior almacenamiento y distribuci&oacute;n.</p>
<p><br />Para llevar a buen t&eacute;rmino las investigaciones, el Centro colabora con prestigiosas organizaciones de la Uni&oacute;n Europea, lo que lo sit&uacute;a en una posici&oacute;n estrat&eacute;gica en el &aacute;mbito europeo y consolida su trayectoria. Ejemplos de su reconocimiento son que Ikerlan-Ik4 lidera el proyecto Labonchip, en el que trabajan importantes entidades internacionales; participa en la Junta directiva de la asociaci&oacute;n industrial europea Artemisia, cuya funci&oacute;n es gestionar la mayor plataforma de investigaci&oacute;n tecnol&oacute;gica de sistemas embebidos &lsquo;inteligentes&rsquo;; es miembro del Comit&eacute; Cient&iacute;fico de la Plataforma Tecnol&oacute;gica Europea EPoSS-Smart Systems Integration; y tambi&eacute;n cuenta con la presencia de investigadores en los equipos evaluadores de las propuestas que financiar&aacute; el 7PM de la Uni&oacute;n Europea.</p>
<p>Esta contribuci&oacute;n al desarrollo investigador europeo se complementa con las alianzas e intercambios de investigadores de Ikerlan-IK4 con organizaciones de referencia internacional en I+D, como la TUW Universidad T&eacute;cnica de Viena, EPFL de Lausanne, UFC Universit&eacute; Franche Comt&eacute;, G2E lab de Grenoble, RWTH de Aachen, Universidad Cat&oacute;lica de Lovaina o el Imperial College de Londres.</p> ]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[ <p>In this piece of news we highlight the Diario Vasco&rsquo;s interview with the General Director of the Alianza IK4, which was, published on July 25th, which stated that the corporation has initiated a new stage and that by the end of the year a new centre would be added, the Guipuzcuan Lortek. With this, and the wait to see what happens with the fusion of Tecnalia, there is the second Basque group of Research and Development made up, which the autonomous government has catalogued as the technological agent in reference within the Basque Network of Science, Technology and Innovation.</p>

			<title><![CDATA[ Una tecnología propia de pilas de combustible ]]></title>
			<description><![CDATA[ <p>El consorcio que desarrolla el proyecto est&aacute; integrado por 13 empresas que subcontratan a 16 grupos de investigaci&oacute;n entre centros tecnol&oacute;gicos, organismos p&uacute;blicos y universidades. El proyecto est&aacute; coordinado por CEGASA. Comenz&oacute; en el a&ntilde;o 2007 y finalizar&aacute; en 2010. Los objetivos propuestos en el proyecto DEIMOS se enmarcan temporalmente como sigue a continuaci&oacute;n:</p>
<p>- A corto plazo: (1) Ampliaci&oacute;n de&nbsp; la base tecnol&oacute;gica en Pilas de combustible en Espa&ntilde;a y (2) creaci&oacute;n de un consorcio de empresas, centros tecnol&oacute;gicos y universidades con capacidad de participar y liderar proyectos en VII PM y programas sucesivos de la UE.</p>
<p>- A medio plazo: (3) Desarrollo de tecnolog&iacute;as punteras en al &aacute;mbito de las pilas de combustible</p>
<p>- A largo plazo: (4) Generaci&oacute;n de pilas de combustible competitivas para desarrollar nuevos productos y servicios para los nuevos sistemas de distribuci&oacute;n de energ&iacute;a. (5) Incremento de la seguridad y sostenibilidad del suministro energ&eacute;tico mediante la utilizaci&oacute;n de tecnolog&iacute;as energ&eacute;ticas limpias como las pilas de combustible.</p>

			<title><![CDATA[ The DYNXPERTS project starts ]]></title>
			<description><![CDATA[ <p>Despite stiff international competition to obtain funding under the economic recovery plan of the EC, and more specifically, within the call for Public Private Partnerships "Factories of the Future" (PPP FoF-NMP), the IDEKO-IK4 Technology Centre has won the coordination of the only European project with a Spanish coordinator, approved at the first call for projects in the FoF-NMP-2010 program.</p>
<p>The DYNXPERTS "Plug-and-Produce Components for Manufacturing Systems with Optimal Dynamic Performance" project aims to create manufacturing systems with easy-to-implement devices (according to the "Plug-and-Produce" philosophy), capable of adapting their properties and performance to the changing conditions of the process.</p>
<p>These "plug-and-produce" components will be self-sufficient provided with intelligence, with built-in advanced sensing systems and actuator functions, and several applications are in turn based on smart materials.</p>
<p>The DYNXPERTS project comprises a consortium of 12 partners, five of them Spanish, from five European countries. The consortium has a balanced participation of companies, research centres and universities and has a budget of 5.1 million euros, with EU funding of 3.5 million euros. The DYNXPERTS project has a duration of 3 years and was officially launched on June 1st 2010.</p> ]]></description>

			<title><![CDATA[ Tekniker-IK4 develops the standard that will measure radiation in Spain ]]></title>
			<description><![CDATA[ <p>(Eibar, July 2010). Tekniker-IK4 has designed and developed for CIEMAT (Research Agency for Excellence in Energy, Environment and Technology), which is attached to The Science and Innovation Ministry, an instrument that will serve as a standard in Spain to measure and calibrate the radiation of instruments which use X-rays. The equipment, the latest generation of air ionization chamber, means Spain has a primary standard for measurements in this field, which avoids depending on other countries and puts Spain on a level with the US, UK, Germany and France.</p>
<p>The equipment developed by the Basque technological centre, with a cost above 100,000 Euros, was recently delivered to CIEMAT's headquarters in Madrid.</p>
<p>The increase in activity and new resources in radiotherapy and in fields such as biology means an increasing demand for the measurement of exposure levels. That is to say, the amount of radiation which patients can receive when in radiotherapy or x-ray diagnosis, or to professionals (researchers or medical staff) who work with this kind of instrumentation.</p>
<p>Exposure dose is a measure of ionisation produced in air by x-radiation, and the best instrument to measure it is an air ionization chamber. This is an instrument designed to detect radiation produced by ionization in a gas, in this instance air, and measure its effect. In this way, through complex calculations, the "air-kerma" can be determined (a value which expresses the radiation carried to a determined material) and from this, its effects on live tissue, on people.</p>
<p>The estimation of the dose absorbed by live tissue is the basis for radiotherapy treatment (widespread in the treatment of diseases such as cancer), while the estimation of environmental or personal dose is essential for the radiological protection of workers and the public in general.</p>
<p>With the primary standard developed by Tekniker-IK4 now in operation, the calibration of the measuring devices in medicine, or the radiation monitors for radiological protection in industry, will be considerably improved. Logically, not all instruments will be calibrated directly against the primary standard, but the fact that a greater number of secondary standards draw directly from the primary standard guarantees a higher quality of calibration.</p>
<p>The end objective of metrology, the discipline in which this technology is developed, is to attempt to ensure that all the units of measurement have the same value in time and place. Therefore, all measurement systems are distinguished by being traceable, that is to say, comparable to universal references or standards of the quantities they measure.</p>
<p>The world&acute;s most precise barometer</p>
<p>The radiation standard is not the first piece of advanced scientific equipment that the Mechatronics and Precision Engineering Department of Tekniker-IK4 has developed for the Spanish Government. Last year it designed and manufactured for the Spanish Metrological Centre (CEM) the world&acute;s most precise barometer that also became the absolute standard in Spain for pressure measurement.</p>
<p>Both developments are the result of more than two decades of collaboration with Tekniker IK-4. In fact, this has been the starting point of the Eibar technology centre's specialization in precision engineering and in the supply of scientific equipment, in which it is now a leader.</p>
<p>With almost 30 years of experience in the research of applied technology and in its transfer to the Basque industrial fabric, the Eibar based centre has reached a high level of specialization in four large areas (Mechatronics and Precision Engineering, Surface Engineering, Production Engineering, and Automation and Manufacturing Technologies) which allows it to place its cutting-edge technology at the service of those requiring it.</p>

			<title><![CDATA[ IK4 y el Gobierno Vasco firman un convenio para fomentar la innovación y el desarrollo tecnológico ]]></title>
			<description><![CDATA[ <p>El Gobierno Vasco otorga a la Alianza la consideraci&oacute;n de Agente Tecnol&oacute;gico de referencia dentro de la Red Vasca de Ciencia, Tecnolog&iacute;a e Innovaci&oacute;n</p>
<p>El consejero de Industria, Innovaci&oacute;n, Comercio y Turismo, Bernab&eacute; Unda, ha firmado hoy un convenio con el presidente de IK4 Research Alliance, Rafael Barrenechea, para fomentar la innovaci&oacute;n y el desarrollo tecnol&oacute;gico en Euskadi. El acuerdo incluye un marco estable de colaboraci&oacute;n entre ambas partes, que se concreta en dos novedades relevantes. Por un lado, se abre la posibilidad de que la Administraci&oacute;n participe en la toma de decisiones de IK4. Por otro, el Gobierno Vasco pasa a considerar a la Alianza como Agente Tecnol&oacute;gico de referencia dentro de la Red Vasca de Ciencia, Tecnolog&iacute;a e Innovaci&oacute;n. Este acuerdo se produce tras el proceso de integraci&oacute;n en un nuevo sistema de gobernanza com&uacute;n de los siete centros que componen IK4 (CEIT, Cidetec, Gaiker, Ideko, Ikerlan, Tekniker y Vicomtech, a lo largo de 2010 se materializar&aacute; la incorporaci&oacute;n de LORTEK a la Alianza), que acaba de culminar.</p>
<p>El Gobierno Vasco reconoce mediante este acuerdo que en los &uacute;ltimos a&ntilde;os los centros tecnol&oacute;gicos que han confluido en IK4 Research Alliance han realizado un esfuerzo en la implantaci&oacute;n y adecuaci&oacute;n de sus infraestructuras tecnol&oacute;gicas orientadas a la captaci&oacute;n, generaci&oacute;n y transferencia de tecnolog&iacute;a al entramado empresarial de Euskadi.</p>
<p>El convenio, asimismo, recoge la contribuci&oacute;n de IK4 al desarrollo industrial del Pa&iacute;s Vasco, al proporcionar mediante la investigaci&oacute;n aplicada, el desarrollo tecnol&oacute;gico y la innovaci&oacute;n la permanente adecuaci&oacute;n de las empresas vascas a los requerimientos de competitividad en un entorno globalizado.</p>
<p>El convenio pretende dar un paso hacia un marco estable que permita la planificaci&oacute;n de los recursos humanos, de los medios t&eacute;cnicos y de las l&iacute;neas de investigaci&oacute;n a medio plazo, en un sistema de innovaci&oacute;n coordinado y de excelencia que garantice la financiaci&oacute;n suficiente y adecuada de las investigaciones.</p>
<p>El acuerdo supone un reconocimiento a la "madurez" alcanzada por IK4 y a su papel como "aliado estrat&eacute;gico del sector empresarial vasco". En este sentido, existe una exigencia mutua, entre el Gobierno y la Alianza tecnol&oacute;gica, para orientar su actividad a la consecuci&oacute;n de resultados.</p>
<p>Adem&aacute;s, se contempla la modificaci&oacute;n de los estatutos de la Alianza, de modo que el Departamento de Industria, Innovaci&oacute;n, Comercio y Turismo participar&aacute; en sus &oacute;rganos de gobierno. En concreto, el acuerdo incluye el establecimiento de un modelo de gobernanza corporativo que mantiene el car&aacute;cter privado de IK4, aunque permite a las Administraciones p&uacute;blicas participar en el dise&ntilde;o y desarrollo de la nueva organizaci&oacute;n. La representaci&oacute;n institucional en los &oacute;rganos de gobierno de la Alianza ser&aacute; de al menos un 25%, de los cuales el Gobierno Vasco tendr&aacute; la mayor&iacute;a absoluta.</p>
<p>Adem&aacute;s, IK4 someter&aacute; a la ratificaci&oacute;n del Departamento de Industria, Innovaci&oacute;n, Comercio y Turismo las decisiones m&aacute;s relevantes de su organizaci&oacute;n, tales como los nombramientos de sus directivos o modificaciones estatutarias.</p>
<p>Por su parte, el Departamento otorga a IK4 la consideraci&oacute;n de Agente Tecnol&oacute;gico de referencia para el desarrollo de su pol&iacute;tica y estrategia de I+D+i. Asimismo, el Gobierno promover&aacute; un modelo equilibrado de financiaci&oacute;n privada-p&uacute;blica, siguiendo los modelos europeos de financiaci&oacute;n de las corporaciones tecnol&oacute;gicas. Para eso aplicar&aacute; programas de apoyo que ayudar&aacute;n a IK4 a desarrollar sus capacidades tecnol&oacute;gicas en funci&oacute;n de los resultados obtenidos. Es objetivo de este marco modelo alcanzar una financiaci&oacute;n b&aacute;sica estable del 25% de la I+D+i consolidada de la Alianza IK4.</p>
<p>La vigencia del convenio comienza hoy y permanecer&aacute; el tiempo de duraci&oacute;n del Plan de Ciencia, Tecnolog&iacute;a e Innovaci&oacute;n del Gobierno.</p>
<p>La Alianza Tecnol&oacute;gica IK4, integrada actualmente por siete centros tecnol&oacute;gicos vascos (CEIT, CIDETEC, GAIKER, IDEKO, IKERLAN, TEKNIKER y VICOMTECH y con LORTEK en proceso de incorporaci&oacute;n), obtuvo en 2009 un volumen global de ingresos superior a los 80 M&euro; en I+D+i. En la actualidad, IK4 aglutina a m&aacute;s de 1.250 profesionales y desarrolla su actividad en torno a ocho unidades cient&iacute;fico-tecnol&oacute;gicas: Biotecnolog&iacute;a y Biomateriales, Micro y Nanotecnolog&iacute;a, Medio Ambiente y Reciclado, Energ&iacute;a, Gesti&oacute;n y Producci&oacute;n Industrial, Mecatr&oacute;nica Comunicaci&oacute;n., Materiales y Procesos, y Tecnolog&iacute;as de la Informaci&oacute;n y la Comunicaci&oacute;n.</p>
<p>Esta especializaci&oacute;n le permite posicionarse como partner tecnol&oacute;gico de las empresas para acometer cualquier tipo de proyectos en multitud de sectores de aplicaci&oacute;n. Por eso, IK4 es tambi&eacute;n un referente en participaci&oacute;n en proyectos de investigaci&oacute;n impulsados por las Administraciones europea, espa&ntilde;ola y vasca.</p> ]]></description>
