A Guide to Making a Bootable Mac OS Flash Drive

A Guide to Making a Bootable Mac OS Flash Drive

In some cases, users need to install Mac OS, but they can only work from Windows. In such a situation, it can be quite tricky, because common utilities like Rufus won't do the job. But this task is feasible, you just have to know what utilities to use. However, their list is very short: only three utilities can be used to create a bootable Mac OS flash drive from Windows.

How to create a bootable Mac OS flash drive

Before creating bootable media, you need to download a system image. In this case, the format used is not ISO, but DMG. However, the same UltraISO allows you to convert files from one format to another. Therefore, this program can be used in the same way, as it is done when writing any other operating system to a flash drive. But first things first.

Method 1: UltraISO

So, to burn a Mac OS image to removable media, follow a few simple steps:

  1. Download the program, install it and run it. In this case not much happens.
  2. Then click on the menu "Tools". at the top of the open window. In the drop-down menu, select an option "Turn into…".
  3. In the next window, select the image to convert. To do this, under the heading "File to convert". click the button with the triple point. This will open the standard file selection window. Specifies where the previously downloaded image in DMG format is located. In the next field "Output directory". you can specify where the resulting operating system file will be saved. There is also a button with three dots that shows the folder where you want to save it. In the block "Output format". check the box next to "ISO standard ...". Press the button "Become"..
  4. Wait while the program converts the specified image to the format you need. Depending on how heavy the original file is, this process can take up to half an hour.
  5. After that, everything is pretty standard. Insert the flash drive into your computer. Tap on "File". in the upper right corner of the program window. In the drop-down menu, click "To open…".. A file selection window will open where you just have to specify where the previously converted image is located.
  6. Then select the menu "Self-loading".… Specify. «Write an image of the hard disk ...».
  7. Near the inscription. "Disk drive:" select your flash drive. If you wish, you can check the box "Check".. This will cause the specified drive to be checked for write errors. Next to the legend "Writing method". select the middle one (not the last or the first). Press the button "Record"..
  8. Wait for UltraISO to create a bootable media, which you can use to install the operating system on your computer.

If you have any difficulties, perhaps more detailed instructions on using UltraISO can help you. If not, write in the comments what doesn't work for you.

Method 2: BootDiskUtility

A small program called BootDiskUtility was created specifically for writing Mac OS flash drives. They can not only be loaded with the full operating system, but also with programs for it. To use this utility, do the following

  1. Download the program and run it from the archive. To do this, click on the button named "Bu". It is not very clear why the developers decided to do the upload process this way.
  2. In the top panel, select "Options".and then in the drop-down menu, "Setting".. The program settings window appears. Check the box next to "DL". in the block. "Clover bootloader source". Also be sure to check the box next to "Boot partition size". Once done, press the button "AGREE". at the bottom of this window.
  3. Now, in the main window of the program, select the menu "Tools". at the top, and then click "Clover FixDsdtMask Calculator". Check the boxes there as shown in the photo below. In principle, it is desirable that all items are checked except SATA, INTELGFX, and a few others.
  4. Now insert the flash drive and click "Format disk". in the BootDiskUtility main window. This will format the removable media.
  5. This will result in two partitions on the drive. Don't be alarmed by this. The first is the Clover bootloader (it was created immediately after formatting in the previous step). The second is the partition of the operating system to install (Mavericks, Mountain Lion, etc.). It is necessary to download them previously in hfs format. So select the second partition and click "Restore partition".. This will bring up a window to select the partition (the hfs). Specify where you are. This will start the writing process.
  6. Wait for the bootable flash drive creation to complete.

Method 3: TransMac

Another utility specifically designed for writing on the Mac OS. In this case the use is much easier than in the previous program. TransMac also requires an image in DMG format. To use this tool, do the following:

  1. Download the program and run it on your computer. Run it as administrator. To do this, right-click on the TransMac shortcut and select "Execute as an administrator"..
  2. Insert the flash drive. If the program does not detect it, restart TransMac. On your drive, right-click, point to "Format disk".and then "Format with disk image".
  3. The same window will appear to select the downloaded image. Specifies the path of the DMG file. Then a notice will appear that all data on the media will be erased. Click on "AGREE"..
  4. Wait for TransMac to write the Mac OS to the selected flash drive.

As you can see, the creation process is quite simple. Unfortunately, there are no other ways to carry out the task in question, so it remains to use the three previous programs.
