How to download HEVC codec for H.265 video for free in Windows 10

If you have an iPhone or other device that uses HEVC (High Efficiency Video Codec, H.265) video by default, these videos may not play on your Windows 10 computer by default, due to the lack of the necessary codec in your default system.

When running a video with the HEVC codec in the Windows 10 built-in player, you will be prompted to install paid extensions for this format. If you go to the Windows Store app store and search for HEVC, the codec is found as "HEVC Video Extensions", but Microsoft suggests that you buy it, which means that it is not available for free:
