Skype problems: no sound

Skype problems: no sound

One of the most common problems when using Skype is a situation where there is no sound. Naturally, in this case it is only possible to communicate by writing text messages, and the video functions and voice calls, in fact, become useless. But it is these characteristics that value Skype. Let's find out how to turn on sound in Skype if you don't have it.

Trouble on the other side of the line

First of all, the lack of sound in Skype during a conversation can be due to problems of the interlocutor. These can be of the following nature:

  • No microphone;
  • Microphone failure;
  • Driver problem;
  • Incorrect sound settings in Skype.

The lesson on what to do if the Skype microphone is not working will help you, while we will concentrate on solving the problem that is on your side.

And determining the side of the problem is quite simple: just call another user. If you can't even hear the other party this time, the problem is probably on your side.

Connect an audio headset

If you have determined that the problem is still on your side, then first of all you need to find out the following point: the sound is not heard only in Skype, or in other programs, too, is there a similar failure in operation? To do this, turn on any audio player installed on your computer and play the audio file with it.

If the sound is heard normally, then proceed to solve the problem, directly, in the Skype application itself, if again nothing is heard, then you should carefully check if you have connected the sound headphones (speakers, headphones, etc. ). You should also pay attention that there are no breaks in the sound reproduction devices themselves. This can be verified by connecting another similar device to the computer.

Another reason why the audio does not play on the computer in general, including Skype, may be the lack or corruption of the drivers responsible for the sound. To check if they work, type Win + R. Then the "Run" window will open. Enter the expression "devmgmt.msc" in it, and click the "OK" button.

We go to the Device Manager. Open the "Sound, video and game controllers" section. There must be at least one driver designed for sound reproduction. If there is no driver available, you must download one from the official website of the sound output device you are using. It is best to use special utilities for this purpose, especially if you don't know which driver to download.

If the driver is present, but marked with a cross or an exclamation point, it means that it is not working properly. In this case, you have to uninstall it and install a new one.

Computer sound malfunctions.

But, it could be much simpler than that. For example, you may have your computer on mute. To check, in the notification area, tap the speaker icon. If the volume control is at the bottom, that was the reason for the lack of sound in Skype. Raise it up.

Additionally, a muted audio signal can be a crossed-out speaker symbol. In this case, to activate audio playback, just click on this symbol.

Audio output is disabled in Skype

However, if the sound plays normally in other programs, and there is no sound in Skype only, your output to this program may be disabled. To check, click the speaker in the systray again and click "Mixer".

In the window that appears, note: if in the section responsible for transmitting the sound to Skype, the speaker icon is crossed out, or the sound control is turned all the way down, it means that the Skype sound is deactivated. To turn it on, press the crossed-out speaker icon or turn up the volume control.

Skype settings.

If none of the above solution methods have revealed the problem, and yet the sound is not playing exclusively on Skype, then you have to look into its settings. Go to the "Tools" and "Settings" menu options one by one.

Then open the "Sound settings" section.

In the "Speakers" settings block, make sure that the sound is output exactly on the device from which you expect to hear it. If there is another device in the configuration, you just have to change it for the one you want.

To check if the sound works, just click the start button next to the form to select the device. If the sound plays normally, you have successfully configured the program.

Updating and reinstalling the program

In case none of the above methods have helped and you have determined that the audio playback problem is solely due to the Skype software, you should try updating it or uninstalling and reinstalling Skype.

As practice shows, in some cases, sound problems may be caused by using an old version of the program, or the application files may be corrupt, and reinstallation will help to fix it.

To avoid getting bogged down with updates in the future, go through the "Advanced" and "Automatic update" items in the main settings window one by one. Then click on the "Enable automatic updates" button. This will automatically update your version of Skype and make sure you don't have any issues, including audio, if your version is out of date.

As you can see, a significant number of factors can be the reason why you cannot hear your caller on Skype. The problem may be on the side of the interlocutor, or it may be on yours. In this case, the key is to determine the cause of the problem so that you know how to fix it. The easiest way to determine the cause is to rule out other possible variants of the audio problem.
