The most common problem in communication over Skype is a problem with the microphone. It may just not work or you may have audio issues. Learn more about what to do if your Skype microphone isn't working.
There can be many reasons why your microphone is not working. Consider each cause and the solution that follows from it.
Table of Contents
Reason 1: The microphone is disconnected
The simplest cause may be a disconnected microphone. First of all, check that the microphone is connected to the computer and that the cable that goes to it is not broken. If this is okay, check if the sound is reaching the microphone.
- To do this, right-click on the speaker icon in the tray (lower right corner of the desktop) and select with recording devices.
- A window will open with the recording device settings. Locate the microphone you are using. If it is off (gray line), right-click the microphone and turn it on.
- Now say something into the microphone. The bar on the right should be filled with green.
- This bar should reach at least halfway when speaking out loud. If there is no bar or it rises very weakly, the microphone volume must be increased. To do this, right-click on the line with the microphone and open its properties.
- Open tab "Levels".. Here you have to move the volume sliders to the right. The upper slider is responsible for the main volume of the microphone. If this slider isn't enough, you can move the volume boost slider.
- Now you have to check the sound on Skype itself. Call your contact Echo / sound test. Listen to the advice and then say something into the microphone.
- If you can hear yourself normally, that's fine: you can start communicating.
If there is no sound, it is not enabled in Skype. To activate it, tap the microphone icon at the bottom of the screen. It should not be crossed out.
If after that you still can't hear yourself when making a test call, there is another problem.
Reason 2: Wrong device selected
Skype has an option to select the audio source (microphone). The default device is the one selected by default in the system as well. To fix the sound problem, try selecting the microphone manually.
Selecting a device in Skype 8 and higher
First, let's look at the audio device selection algorithm in Skype 8.
- Click on the icon "Plus". as a dotted line. From the list that appears, select an option "Settings"..
- Then open the parameters section "Sound and video"..
- Click on the parameter "Default communication device" in front of the article "Microphone". . "Sound"..
- In the drop-down list, select the name of the device through which you communicate with the interlocutor.
- Once the microphone is selected, close the configuration window by clicking on the cross in its upper left corner. Now the person you are talking to should be able to hear you.
Selecting a device in Skype 7 and lower versions
In Skype 7 and earlier versions of this program, the selection of a sound device follows a similar script, but still has some differences.
- To do this, open the Skype settings (Tools>Settings).
- Now click on the tab "Sound adjustment"..
- At the top there is a drop-down list to select a microphone.
Select the device you are using as a microphone. In this tab you can also adjust the microphone volume and activate the automatic volume adjustment. After selecting the device, press the key. "Save"..
Check if it works. If this doesn't work either, move on to the next option.
Cause 3: Problem with hardware drivers
If there is no sound in Skype or when you configure it in Windows, the problem is with your hardware. Try reinstalling your motherboard or sound card drivers. You can do this manually or use a special program that automatically finds and installs the drivers on your computer. For example, you can use Snappy Driver Installer.
