To change the screen resolution

The question of changing the resolution in Windows 7 or 8, as well as doing it in the game, although it belongs to the category of "for the very beginners", but is asked quite often. In this tutorial, we are going to cover not only the steps necessary to change the screen resolution directly, but also some other things. In particular, I will tell you about why the necessary resolution may not be in the list of available, for example, with a Full HD 1920 by 1080 screen you cannot put a resolution higher than 800 × 600 or 1024 × 768, about why in modern monitors it is better to set the resolution corresponding to the physical parameters of the matrix, well, about what to do if the whole screen is too large or too shallow.

Change screen resolution in Windows 7

To change the resolution in Windows 7, simply right-click on an empty space on the desktop and select "Screen resolution" from the context menu that appears, where these settings are configured.

It's simple, but some people have problems: blurry letters, everything being too small or too big, not having the proper resolution, and the like. We are going to break down all of them, as well as the possible solutions in order.

  1. In modern monitors (on any LCD - TFT, IPS and others) it is recommended to adjust the resolution corresponding to the physical resolution of the monitor. This information should be in the documentation for your monitor, or if there is no documentation you can find the technical specifications of your monitor on the internet. If you select a lower or higher resolution, distortions will appear - blur, "stairs" and others, which are not good for the eyes. As a general rule, when setting a resolution, "correct" is marked with the word "recommended."
  2. If the list of available resolutions does not show the correct one, and there are only two or three options (640 × 480, 800 × 600, 1024 × 768) and yet the screen is all large, you probably have not installed the drivers for the video card of your computer. You just have to download them from the manufacturer's official website and install them on your computer. Read more about this in the Update video card drivers article.
  3. If everything seems too small when you set the correct resolution, don't be able to change the size of the fonts and elements by setting a lower resolution. Click on the link "Change the size of text and other elements" and set what you want.

These are the most common problems you may encounter with the above actions.

Change screen resolution in game

Most games that run full screen set their own resolution, which you can change. Depending on the game, these settings can be in "Graphics", "Advanced graphics settings", "System" and others. Note that in some very old games you cannot change the screen resolution. One more note: setting a higher resolution in the game can cause it to "slow down", especially on less powerful computers.
