Disable the microphone in Zoom

Option 1: Computer

When using a computer, Zoom's audio input devices are disconnected in one of three selectable ways, in each of which voice transmission can be resumed seamlessly. Also, if you use a separate input device, such as a headset or fixed microphone, don't forget the physical disconnect, which we won't cover in detail in the manual.

Method 1: Conference Setup

The easiest method to log out is to use the control panel directly during the session, which is usually sufficient and no other solutions are needed. In addition, the disconnection can be done not only for you but also for the rest of the participants in the conference, if you are one of the organizers.

Deactivation of the microphone itself

    1. To stop transmitting your own voice in an active conference, expand the program and click the button on the bottom panel Mute button. Despite the signature, the other participants in the call will stop hearing you until you use the function again.
    2. Alternatively, you can press the keyboard key combination "ALT+A"which by default is responsible for the specified option. Unfortunately, this will only work if the software is open or if the mouse cursor is hovered over the active video chat window in minimized mode.
    3. In addition to the above, you can press the arrow on the audio transfer on/off button and use the “Mute computer audio” function. In this case, the deactivation of not only the input device but also the output device is guaranteed, which can be a problem in certain circumstances.

It is not possible to verify that the close has been successful on your own – only by trying to ask other members of the conference something. In the future, please use the button to turn on "Connect the sound."whose legend may vary depending on its deactivation.

Deactivation of the microphone of the interlocutors

    1. If you are the originator or designated host of a conference, you can forcibly disable voice transmission for a specific or individual participant. In the first case, just hover the mouse over the user's photo or video, expand the menu "..." in the upper right corner and use the option "Be quiet"..
    2. To block the microphone of each user, in the main panel of the messenger, open the list of "Members". and at the bottom of the right column, click the button "Mute all sound". The procedure must be confirmed in the pop-up window by pressing "Yes".which instantly disables the votes of the other participants without exception.

If you wish, you can check or uncheck “Allow participants to include their own sound”. If this option is disabled, in the future no user will be able to turn on their own microphone without personal permission from the organizer.

Method 2: Program Settings

In the internal settings of the program in question, there are many parameters responsible for the quality of the voice and the transmission, but unfortunately it is not possible to completely disable it in this way. The only thing you can do is change the source and allow the sound to turn off automatically when connecting to a video chat.

    1. Open the messenger settings using the gear icon on the right side "Home" and click on the tab "Sound". in the left column. Similarly, open "Sound settings". can be accessed by pressing the arrow icon on the audio on/off button during a conference.
    2. While on the specified page, locate the block "Microphone" and first select another streaming audio device via the drop-down list. Unlike handheld devices, on a computer a good alternative can be "Stereo Mixer".which will transmit the data directly from the system.
    3. To have the audio recorder turn off automatically when you start the session, scroll through the section below and check the box next to “Mute my microphone when entering a conference”. Therefore, when you start a call, you will have to manually activate the voice transmission using the corresponding option.

Once you are done changing the settings, you can simply close the window as the settings are applied automatically. Also, if you were in a chat session when the device was changed, this will immediately affect other users.

Method 3: System Settings

Of all the solutions available for a computer, disabling the microphone through the system settings is the most comprehensive and varied method. For this example, we will focus on disabling the device via "Sound control panel". and privacy settings, while you might as well try changing the driver settings, disabling via "Device administrator". and more.

Privacy settings

    2. In the left column menu, select the tab "Microphone" and disable the option “Allow apps to access microphone” и “Allow classic apps to have access to the microphone”. This will lock the input device completely in all programs until the settings are changed again.
    3. Sometimes it is possible to restrict access to an input device without a global change using the list “Select the applications from the Microsoft Store that can access the microphone”. To do this, just activate the slider "On." to the state "Off" On the line "Meeting with Zoom".

This program may not be in the specified list, but it is displayed as a classic application. If you come across such a situation, you will need to disable microphone access as outlined at the beginning.

Option 2: Mobile device

On Android and iOS devices, you can disable the microphone in the same three ways, the main ones being by changing the internal settings of the app. Although the mobile client interface does not differ between platforms, the global settings directly depend on the operating system used.

Method 1: Conference Setup

Once logged into the conference, deactivation is done in one action via a special button on the main toolbar. Each of the organizers can then force the participants to limit their options, as demonstrated above.

Turn off the microphone

    1. To stop transmitting your own voice, regardless of your role in the session, tap anywhere on the screen to display the control panel and use the key. "Be quiet".. This will stop the other conference participants from hearing you.
    2. If you are a regular participant without special privileges, but want to drown out other users, you can remove all audio sources at once. To do this, expand the menu «Details» on the right side of the bottom bar and tap "Be quiet".

This will make all sounds, including other users' voices, disappear from the app without further confirmation. Unfortunately, in a normal situation, it is not possible to limit yourself to deactivating a particular person.

Deactivate the microphone of your interlocutors

    1. The organizer or creator of the conference, as said, can mute other users. If you need to mute the microphone of a specific person, in the lower tab open the list "Participants".Select the desired user on the screen and in the pop-up window use the option "Silent" option.
    2. To do the same for all participants, open the same section of the app, tap the three-dot button in the bottom right corner of the screen, and in the pop-up menu tap "Mute all". Unlike the previous option, this action requires confirmation through a separate window.

Note that disabling the option “Allow participants to turn on their own sound” will cause each user to lock the associated option until the conference ends or the settings are updated. However, the restriction can be removed once the function is used. "Ask about.".

Method 2: Program Settings

You can block your own voice not only during the session, but also in advance by changing the appropriate settings. To do this, go to the tab "Settings" tab.open category "Conferences" and tap the slider next to the item "Mute my microphone".

After this, when you join a conference regardless of your role, voice transmission will be automatically blocked. The rest of the elements of the block "Sound". in the application parameters, unfortunately, they have almost no effect, so they will not be taken into account.

Method 3: System Settings

Just like on a computer, changing the system setting Outgoing sounds in Zoom are guaranteed to be turned off. As an example, we'll focus on the privacy settings responsible for certain apps' access to the microphone.

Android

    1. Deployment of the standard «Settings» and go to the complete list of installed applications. Here, most of the time at the end, you have to touch "Zoom". and on the page that opens, select the category "Permissions"..
    2. Since there are a large number of versions, it is impossible not to mention that the desired element can be presented at once on the screen «Applications and notifications» and "Permission management".. In this case, you must first select "Microphone". and only then find it in the full list "Zoom", the page with which the disconnection is made.

The deactivation itself is done by deactivating the corresponding slider or placing a marker on the element "Ban". The parameters are applied automatically in any case, so you can use the program immediately after its completion.

iOS

    1. To override the originally granted permissions for the messenger in question on an iOS device, open the system app "Settings"., go to category "Privacy". and select "Microphone".. In this case, just touch the slider in the right column opposite "Zoom".
    2. You can also scroll the home page "Settings". almost to the bottom, select "Zoom" and on the screen that appears, disable the option "Microphone". Whichever solution you choose, you don't need to save anything, you can immediately close settings and use the app.

Although it is possible to change the system permissions directly during the conference, it is better not to do so because the application will restart and you will be automatically logged out. The settings themselves can only be changed manually in the future, while you won't see any notifications about the microphone being off, regardless of device, when using the app.

We are glad that we were able to help you with the problem.
